Larry J. Shapiro Director of the Institute for Public Health, Co-Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Professor of Medicine
William Powderly, MD, is the Dr. J. William Campbell Professor of Medicine and the Larry J. Shapiro Director of the Institute for Public Health at Washington University. He is also Co-Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Washington University School of Medicine. From 2005 to 2012, he was Dean of Medicine and Head of the School of Medicine and Medical Sciences at University College Dublin in Ireland.
Dr. Powderly has been actively involved in HIV-related clinical research for almost 30 years. He has been a member of numerous advisory groups on HIV and infectious diseases for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Canadian Institute for Health Research, and the European Medicines Agency. As Director of the Institute for Public Health, Dr. Powderly is particularly interested in finding ways to translate the significant advances in biomedical science into improvements in population and community health.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians In Ireland, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and is, currently, President of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
